INTRO :
** “CYGNET” is currently ON THE HARD at DeROUVILLES BOATYARD in Bayville, NJ sitting out the winter months waiting for next years NEW ENGLAND SAILING SEASON ! I’m in St Augustine. Florida looking for “MY NEW SHOAL DRAFT WINTER TIME SAILBOAT” for sailing the Florida Keys, the Everglades, and the Bahamas. With a shoal draft sailboat I’ll be able to access the SOUNDS of THE EVERGLADES, the HURRICANE HOLES of the BAHAMAS, THE BIGHTS of ANDROS, THE FLATS of THE WESTERN SHORE CREEK on LONG ISLAND, BAHAMAS and so many more BEAUTIFUL ISLAND DESTINATIONS that require a SHALLOW DRAFT VESSEL to access!! I’ll be FISHING MY ARSE OFF !!
** THANKS DAVID !! **
“CYGNET “is a 45’ LOA John G. Alden Ketch, design #894B. Alden named this design “The SEAGOER”, a true classic cruiser. “CYGNET” was built in 1954 at Morse Boatbuilding in Thomaston, Maine.
She was the second of only four vessels built from this design in the early 1950’s and, as far as we know, the only one left in existence.
“CYGNET” , my summer season cruising sailboat, was originally contracted for construction on December 5th, 1953. Constructed of Philippine Mahogany on white oak frames and scheduled for delivery on May 1st, 1954. Among numerous upgrades, Cygnet had a complete repower in 2017 and new B & G instruments in 2023. All systems aboard were beautifully re-engineered by JOE THE SELLER.
I bought “CYGNET” in Mystic Conn mid August 2025. Moved all my gear aboard for 5 days while the seller, Joe, filled my tanks, & helping in many ways, even though it was hard for he & his family to part w/ her. I motored down THE MYSTIC RIVER, 6am, August 26th, heading to Block Island, accompanied by Joe & his 1930’s tugboat “CADET’ into Long Island Sound. A beautiful calm, clear morning, PERFECT !!
** THE ADVENTURE BEGINS !! ** SAILING & FISHING, OHHHHHH YEAAA !! **
I’m spending a couple weeks sailing her in S New England, Block, Newport, Bristol, Cutty maybe, among others. Then, w/ Ed, my 1st Mate, sailing to MY HOME PORT, Barnegat Light, NJ. YES, the infamous BARNEGAT INLET. I’ve spent my life fishing the jetties of Barnegat Inlet for STRIPED BASS, often in very rough weather, BIG STRIPER TIME. Also sailing my past WOODEN CLASSIC SAILBOATS out the inlet N in the summer & S in the fall, heading to the Keys, Bahamas & the Caribbean. After picking up more new gear & seeing my friends on LBI, & fishing my many secret spots inside Barnegat Inlet, its Cape May, Annapolis & then on to Pungeteague Creek, HARBORTON, VIRGINIA, eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting old friends, GOIN FEESHING, & more gearing up.
Then it’s S to Florida & MY BELOVED KEYS. Great sailing & fishing in the Keys. I have family & friends in every state but Georgia heading S. Coastal cruising & visiting towns & my family & friends in towns like Beaufort, NC, Beaufort, SC, Charleston, Fernadina Beach, the St Johns River area, St Augustine, Daytona Beach, all beautiful towns along the Intracoastal Waterway. Sebastian Inlet area is a favorite of mine, great fishing there, & surfing memories of more than 50 years ago when SEBASTIAN INLET was a very popular surf break.
My first cruise was over 45 years ago, on “DESPERADO”, a 1948 25′ WIANNO SR. that I totally restored in my BARNEGAT BAY BOATWORKS shop in Barnegat, NJ. “DESPERADO”, an open sailboat after the rebuild, w/ “ME & BAGGINS”, my black lab, sailed over 1,000 miles on that 1st cruise out of Barnegat Light. “BAGGINS” sailed over 30,000 miles w/ me in his 16 years, TRUELY A GREAT SAILING DOG !!
After the Keys, its east to THE BAHAMAS, fly fishing for BONEFISH on the Andros Flats, Visiting Diane & Rodney, the GREAT BAKERY in Nassau, feeding THE PIGS in Stanial Cay, they love a pint of water !! The fishing & snorkeling in THE BAHAMAS is really excellent, BUT, the real gem, is THE PEOPLE of the outer islands. Their friendliness & open arms ways is a joy to behold in these changing times !! I have so many great stories w/ these people, I’m really looking forward to returning.
I imagine along the way, a few OLD TIMERS, like myself, will dinghy on over to see “CYGNET”, deservedly so. Talk a little OLD TIMES, PAST BOATS, BIG STORMS & such. I’m looking forward to it. “CYGNET’s” designer, John Alden was a GREAT YACHT DESIGNER, “CYGNET” is a TRUE WOODEN CLASSIC BEAUTY !! “CYGNET” is my 3rd ALDEN. My 1925 53′ LOA Alden Schooner “HEARTS DESIRE” was pretty much the favorite boat of all my friends. I single handed her, leaving early fall 2007, heading to THE ANTIGUA CLASSICS, held in April, 2008. ONE GREAT CRUISE !! Buying a tree in the Dominican Republic to replace my snapped 24′ main boom. Hand shaping her on the decks, a good months work !! 3 PIRATES trying to board me in the Mona Passage heading to Bouqeuron, Puerto Rico on the S W corner. All in all, a great, exciting cruise.
SOOOOOOOO, we will see what lies ahead, lurking in the shallows, waiting for “CYGNET” & myself. Hopefully, fair winds, lots & lots of fish, & new friends I’m sure.
Please TAKE GOOD CARE, Glenn
