    There is a very large group of sailors who absolutely LOVE CATBOATS !!  I AM ONE OF THEM, FOR SURE !!  Their huge gaff mainsails, big comfortable cockpits, their wide beams, their barn door rudders,  all take me back to the late 1800’s when catboats were the WORKBOATS, the PARTYBOATS,  of all the coastwise towns from New Jersey to Maine. The number of boatbuilders, both forgotten and immortalized in time with their still existing  “WORKS OF ART”  inspire many an  OLD TIME SAILOR  to JUST DREAM, to sit back on a cold February night and DREAM !! To think the sailing season will begin in the not too distant future.  

    Then there are,  THE RACING CATBOATS, THE SANDBAGGERS, the A CATS of Barnegat Bay, boats like “SILENT MAID”, the Barnegat Bay Sneakboxes, the BEETLE CATS, and so on and on through the many decades. Then of course the DESIGNER / BUILDERS. Hand carving a half model to their ideas of the ultimate WORK BOAT with a small cabin and huge cockpit to work the lobster pots in New England. The PARTY CATS, big enough to fit six or eight fisherman trolling for BIG BLUEFISH on Barnegat Bay, or Vineyard Sound, lines tangled, most of them with a FISH ON while sailing through a blitzing school of 10# blues, yelling  “HEY YOU’RE TANGLING UP MY LINE”.  Famous names like THE CROSBY’s of OSTERVILLE,   Capt’ Nat, David Beaton & Sons of Mantolokin, NJ, Fenwick Williams, Gil Smith of Patchougue, NY, Manuel Swartz Roberts of Marthas Vineyard, Mass,  Charles Anderson, C.C. Hanley, Charles Witholtz, just to name a few that I have studied over the years. All great designers and builders.  Their CATBOATS are nothing short of legend.
