“THE CATBOAT”

Wood or fiberglass construction, they are a beautiful sight to behold. Their broad beam, their  “BARNDOOR”  rudders, & their

“MAJESTIC MAIN SAILS”   just  “GRABS THE IMAGINATION”.  With their spacious cockpits allowing many friends to accompany you on a

“COOL AFTERNOON BREEZE”,  it’s   “NO WONDER”   so many sailors have  “FOND MEMORIES ”  of those  “SUMMER CATBOAT SAILING DAYS”.

They generally range in size from 14′ to 26′ in length. Originally used as workboats for passenger ferries or fishing, legend says that the name “Catboat” comes from the fishermen having to “shoo” the cats away from the dead fish on the boat.

There is some debate as to where the Catboat was originally built – New Jersey, Long Island Sound or Massachusetts. The first Sneakbox, which was essentially a Catboat, was built in Barnegat, NJ in 1836. Regardless, they were alive and in generous use on the bay in the mid-1880s.
