Wooden boats on Idaho’s protected Middle Fork of the Salmon River

The Middle Fork, one of the first rivers protected under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, is one of the steepest descents I had ever rowed. My arms ached and my legs cramped as we threaded our drift boats through Hell’s Half Mile, Velvet Falls, Murph’s Hole, and a dozen other rapids that had no names.

CAPTAIN KIDD

CAPTAIN KIDD is hull # 1298 and was built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in 1936. She was likely the last Herreshoff 12 built with oak trim. Over her long lifetime, her transom had been replaced in mahogany, hardware had been lost and mis-replaced and her oak trim painted.

CRICKET is an 18 foot wooden catboat with a bowsprit and a small jib. She is rigged with a spinnaker halyard but we have never tried to fly a spinnaker on her. She is framed in oak and planked with mahogany.
